Here at Makeup.com headquarters, us editors are known for being the ones always to show up to the office with a polished—and sometimes bold—makeup look. After all, with so many products to write about, it’s practically mandatory that we try them out on ourselves in the mornings (it’s a hard job we know). When the weekend rolls around, however, we like to step out of work mode and just be our casual selves…during the day at least (evenings? That’s another story, literally). Whether we’re rounding up our girlfriends for brunch, heading out of town, or just lounging around the apartment, we’re all about embracing a low-key daytime look. Ready to give the red lip a rest? Read on for three editors’ no-fail recommendations for casual weekend beauty.
Caitlin:
It is rare that something sporty makes its way into my weekend agenda, but my latest obsession is learning how to play golf…which means many trips to the driving range. I like to wear as little makeup as possible in the heat but maintain a few elements of my overall beauty routine. For even (and protected) skin I wear Giorgio Armani Maestro foundation. The SPF 15 plus the lightweight formula is the perfect combination for my skin. For a quick way to look pretty, I add a touch of peachy pink blush right on the cheek bone. For eyes, I wear waterproof mascara to play up long lashes without worrying about sweat. And to keep my lips nourished in the sun, I opt for a balm rather than a lipstick. My staples are Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 and S.W. Basics Lip Balm in Peppermint.
Jessica:
I’m an eye makeup kind of girl. Having (what I think of as) small eyes, I always love wearing liner and eyeshadow to make my eyes look bigger. So, on the weekends when I’m keeping my look casual-but-done, eyes are usually the one feature I choose to play up. In this picture I'm wearing MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre for a better-than-nude look and Covergirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner, a drugstore favorite for fuss-free, all day wear. Lately, I'm also loving Kiehl’s BB Cream (since it’s packed with SPF 50—nice for summer), with LORAC bronzer for a natural, but not washed out, finish. I keep the lips neutral with whatever balm I have laying around or sometimes nude lipstick if I’m feeling saucy. This is pretty consistently my weekend beauty uniform whether I’m brunching, antique shopping, picnicking, or just hanging around at home.
Carolyn:
Like Caitlin and Jessica, I just want to be pretty but very natural during my off days. Plus the less work I have to do to achieve the look, the better. My weekend activity of choice is anything that involves getting out of the city—and lately that means hopping on the bus to Montauk, a surfer town on the very end of Long Island. While my surfing skills are sorely lacking, I do have that carefree beauty look nailed down. I skip foundation completely in favor of MD Solar Sciences Tinted UVA-UVB SPF 30 Sunscreen and apply a liberal dusting of AERIN Pretty Bronze Illuminating Powder on the cheeks and down the T-Zone. Lipstick is the one product I can’t skip but for quick applications, I only use Maybelline Color Whisper. The gel formulation is so lightweight and provides a magical combination of color, shine, and hydration. I find eyeshadow and mascara too high maintenance for my lazy days, so I complete the look by only focusing on the brows and filling them out.
