One of the most common things clients say to me is, "I heard someone with my skin tone can't wear this color.” When it comes to makeup it should never be about what you “can't” wear—you should always wear what makes you feel most beautiful. There are endless beauty possibilities for all skin tones, and I say it’s time we ditch the restricting makeup rules of the past and move forward with a fresh perspective. To get started, here’s a guide to my favorite shades for each skin tone.
Fair Skin
If you’re fair, you’re working with a pure canvas for color. The key is not to overload with too much pigment all at once. Find your area of focus and soften up the rest. For instance, if you're going for a bold lip color, opt for soft blush and eyeshadow. Love a nude look? No problem. Just make sure nudes have the proper undertones of peach or pink, so that the skin doesn't look completely mute—just enough sass in all the right places!
Your Most Flattering Colors: pinks; peaches; soft lilacs
Product Recommendations: NARS Sheer Lipstick in Roman Holiday; Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush 10; Bobbi Brown Metallic Eye Shadow in Lavender 21
Medium Skin
With medium skin it's all about the glow. The key is to use just the right amount of warmth, without adding too much red to the skin. Opt for warmer shades instead of cooler tones, and your makeup will blend seamlessly.
Your Most Flattering Colors: bronze; coral; orange reds
Product Recommendations: Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc in Golden Mosaic; Estée Lauder Pure Color Sheer RollerGloss in Succulent; Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Color in Summer Sunset
Dark Skin
Dark skin is one of the most beautiful and unique skin tones because pores are simply non-existent. When working with dark skin, it's important to use deep colors instead of light, shimmery hues. Rich tones will brighten the skin, giving it a more supple texture.
Your Most Flattering Colors: fuchsia; deep berry/plum; oxblood
Product Recommendations: Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer #12; MAC Amplified Crème Lipstick in Dark Side; Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil in MI6
