Everyone wants her complexion to look radiant, fresh and healthy, but no one desires a greasy, slick look. Unfortunately the sticky and humid summer weather can turn even the most carefully applied makeup into a hot mess (pun intended) within minutes of stepping out of an air-conditioned room. To help us achieve a dewy complexion, without teetering into oily territory, we enlisted the help of Graziella Vella, SpaceNK International Makeup Artist.
“Radiant skin is about achieving the right balance between dewy and matte; eliminating dull skin tones and illuminating using the right textures to suit one’s skin type,” explains Vella. “To prevent makeup from looking greasy, one must be careful not to layer too many shiny or shimmery products at once and place highlighters in the right areas.” Below, Vella gives us four tips on how to get the glow and skip the shine.
1. Stick to Light Moisturizers
“To prevent an oily outcome, any skincare used under makeup must not be of a rich texture,” says Vella. “Instead use a lightweight moisturizer and concentrate mostly on the drier areas. When using sunscreen, also make sure it’s an oil-free formula.”

2. Apply Primer
“Primers are great products to brighten and enhance the skin,” says Vella. “If you’re concerned about greasiness, look for one that works for normal/oily combination skin as it eliminates redness (combination skin can be prone to this in the T-Zone area), minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines and creates a soft focus effect.”

3. Spot Touch with a Brightening Concealer
“Add radiance by applying a brightening concealer in the inner corner and under the eyes, around the nose and outer sides of the chin,” advises Vella.

4. Illuminate Strategically
“When you are using a shimmery highlighting powder make sure that the rest of the skin is not shiny, particularly the t-zone,” warns Vella. “If your skin tends to get oily keep highlighter to the cheeks only and use less shimmery textures. If you have drier skin, you can apply the highlighter to the top of cheek bones, temples, bridge of the nose, chin and cupids bow.”
