5 Steps to Transition Makeup from Day to Night

You're on your walk home when your friend calls you – she needs a wing woman at the bar tonight. With only a few precious minutes to get ready, you probably don't have time to start over with a clean slate. Here are 5 easy steps to take your daytime makeup to the next level.
1. Touch up.
Prepping for a night out means tweaking and fixing the makeup you’ve already applied. Get rid of the day’s oil by blotting with rice paper. Another fool-proof way to get that matte look? MAC’s Blot Powder. It absorbs oil and sets your foundation, without adding color or looking cakey. You can also purchase similar loose powder by brands like Maybelline, Tarte and Palladio.
2. Extend your eyeliner.
A simple way to take your makeup from day to night is to darken the eye makeup. Extend your eyeliner past the end of your eyelid for a subtle cat eye. You can also darken up your eyeshadow, taking it from a soft neutral to a smokey eye. A do-it-all like Lorac’s ‘Unzipped’ palette makes both day and night makeup possible in one purchase.
3. Go bold.
A neutral lip is great for the daytime, but unless you’re rocking an extremely intense smokey eye, chances are you can get away with a bold lip for nighttime. Pick a deep berry color or a vibrant pink hue if you’re not a fan of the classic cherry red.
4. Illuminate.
Since you’ve probably got a pretty good flush going from your day, the key to nighttime makeup is subtle shimmer. Purchase an illuminating stick like NARS ‘The Multiple’ multi purpose makeup stick or brightening drops like MAC Lustre Drops. Blend them along cheekbones, brow bones, and your cupid’s bow. If you’re wearing a tank or something strapless, run it along your collarbones and shoulders as well for a sexy summer glow.
5. Add a coat.
Of mascara, that is. Adding another coat of mascara to your existing lashes will darken the eye and create a smoldering glare, perfect for a night out. Choose a lengthening formula rather than a thickening one, since you don’t necessarily need any more volume.
